I. An Overview
The department was originally the Department of Macromolecules of the former branch campus of Beijing University of Chemical Technology in 1978. With the development of the college, the department gradually evolved into the Department of Biology & Medicine in 2002.
Presently 35 faculties work in the department, consisting of 20 full-time teachers and 15 staff. Among them, there are 7 professors, 11 doctors and 12 masters. The department provides two undergraduate programs: Bio-engineering and Pharmaceutical Engineering, and one vocational higher education program — Pharmaceutical Technology.
The department has dramatically improved its equipment and facilities in recent years. Laboratories， such as the basic chemistry lab, the chemical-engineering lab, the instrumental analysis lab, the biochemistry and molecular biology lab, the microorganism lab, the medicine- chemistry lab, the Pharmaceutical lab and GMP factories， are established for teaching while other laboratories are built up for research in the areas of biology, chemistry and pharmacology. Major instruments, including the UV-Vis spectrophotometer, the infrared spectrometer, GPC, GC, HPLC, GC-MASS, LC-MASS, the atomic absorption spectrometer, the fluorimeter, spray dryer and supercritical fluid extraction devices are equipped to meet the needs of teaching and researching. Their total value is about￥ 6.8 million.
The department bases its discipline construction on the Bio-chemical subject. Teaching and researching work focuses mainly on natural products separation, new pharmaceutical technology, gene-clone and expression, and chemical technology applied in these areas. Projects from government and companies have been gradually increasing in the past few years, reaching more than 30 entries. The department has signed cooperation agreements with Hainan Aike Pharmacy Co. Ltd and Guangxi Fenglin Wood Industry Group Co., Ltd.
II. Introduction to Specialty
1. Biological Engineering/Bioengineering
Length of schooling: 4 years
Academic Degree: Bachelor of Engineering
Educational Objectives:
Our goal is to greatly promote the academic confidence and practical skills of the undergraduates in bio-engineering to meet the requirements of the economic development of the country and the capital area in four years of education. Students are expected to have a solid understanding of Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry, in addition to that of modern biology, after a systematic study of the theoretical and laboratory courses. It is emphasized that the students are also to be trained in design, manufacture, management, exploitation of new products and technology in bio-engineering at a preliminary professional level. They should develop a high standard of basic knowledge of humanities social sciences, humanistic training, and academic ethics. Therefore, our students will be qualified in research, manufacture, scientific management and other related positions in different sectors and fields, or to pursue an advanced degree in related fields.
Career Prospects:
After finishing their undergraduate studies, many of the students may choose to find a job in related fields, such as bio-pharmaceutical companies, bio-technology institutes, and hospitals. They can also choose to continue their postgraduate studies home or abroad after graduation.
Features of Specialty:
The application of biotechnology in the research and manufacture in related fields is highlighted. Emphasis is laid on basic academic theories as well as technology and skill practice in research into bio-activators at molecular, cellular and individual level, the separation and preparation of natural bioactive substances. Students are encouraged to enter a research laboratory after their second year of study, when they can apply for the undergraduate research funded by the University or Beijing Municipal Education Commission. Through a variety of research activities, they are expected to be able to solve and analyze problems by applying studied knowledge to real work. Some undergraduates have published co-authored papers in professional journals up to now. Some students have won awards from Challenge Cup and Venture Cup, which were held by Beijing Communist Youth League or the university.

Educational Objectives：
This program is to cultivate qualified people who have a good mastery of the basics about pharmaceutical engineering and pharmacy, have the ability to solve the problems from practical projects, be engaged in drug research, design and production, as well as drug quality inspection, management, marketing and dispensing. In addition, students should have innovative spirit and strong social responsibility, and can adapt to the requirements of employers and society.
Career Prospects:
Our graduates can be employed in various fields related to medicine and drugs, including technique research and development, drug production, quality control, application research and drug management. They can be engaged in drug research and developments, drug-producing management, drug preparation, quality control, etc. They can also work in drug research and development and production departments, in hospitals and drug stores for drug dispensing, in medicine trading companies or pharmaceutical enterprises for drug distribution and trade, and in drug supervision sections for quality qualification and quality standard-drawing for drugs. In addition, we have established strong relationships with many large-scale drug enterprises, such as Beijing Tong Ren Tang Group Co., Ltd. and Beijing Double-Crane Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd. and can recommend students for employment and field trip in related enterprises.
Features of Specialty:
Pharmaceutical engineering aims at large pharmaceutical companies, hospitals, drug departments in the capital. The abilities of pharmaceutical preparations, analysis, inspection, new drug approval are needed. Based on medical knowledge, the students are required to master pharmaceutical preparations and the principle of engineering. It focuses greatly on broadening their horizons and cultivating their practical abilities as well. Experiments, practical training and internships join closely together, where the practical content takes up 46% of the total hours. Sophomores can participate in tutors’ scientific projects, taking the advantage of GMP workshop in the college, the platform of analysis and the practice enterprise outside the college. Seniors will be recommended to hospitals or other well-known enterprises for internship, thus internship being closely tied with the employment. Scientific and technical achievements in this speciality are remarkable.
3. Pharmaceutical Preparation Technology
Length of schooling: 3 years
Educational Objectives：
The program is to cultivate applied technique talents who have a good mastery of the basic theories and skills about pharmaceutical technology and drug preparation, who are familiar with pharmaceutical rules and regulations as well as pharmaceutical management, and who have the ability to be engaged in drug dispensing, inspection, marketing, management and application. Students can take part in certificate tests in pharmaceutical industry and then obtain related certification, for example, Pharmaceutical Preparation Technician, Drug Inspector, Chinese Tradition Medicine Dispenser. Graduates can take Licensed Pharmacist Examination to obtain the Certificate of Licensed Pharmacist.
Career Prospects:
Our graduates can be engaged in production and inspection for drugs and health products in drug and health product manufactures; pharmaceutical service, drug dispensing, drug marketing and management as well as reasonable drug usage consultation in hospitals and drug stores; drug analysis and checking in drug inspection departments, drug management and maintenance in drug logistics enterprises.

1. Laying much stress on practical teaching, we have established a small-size drug preparation workshop to simulate actual drug preparation environment, where students can be trained for various solid drug preparation processes, including tablet, granules, capsule, and so forth, which are widely used in drug manufacturers. Via on-site training, students can be familiar with relative regulations of GMP and workshop environment.
2. Our college has perfect professional laboratories and analysis platforms, so that our students can be trained for drug analysis and detection based on the relative requirements of Chinese Pharmacopeia.
3. We also provide students with various opportunities to go on a field trip to hospitals or pharmaceutical enterprises.
